Since 2017, IPIS has been closely collaborating with civil society actors from central and east Africa who want to share their perspective on subjects related to IPIS’ work. Their hands-on experience, unique knowledge and access to information offer local insights relevant to a large audience.
With the editorial support from IPIS, local partners are encouraged to write down their research. This has resulted in a unique series of partner publications, bundled as «Voices from the South». The «Voices from the South» publications do not represent IPIS’ research or views. They are based on the research conducted by our local partners and solely belong to them.
At present, we are developing two dedicated series within the «Voices from the South»:
1. VOIX DU CONGO
covering a variety of topics on human rights issues related to mining activities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Seven publications into this series, our Congolese partners offer you their view on
- the toxic practices of artisanal gold mining, including environmental and health effects (Ituri, Kivu)
- legal/illegal taxation, networks of fraud in smuggling and extortion practices related to artisanal mining (South Kivu, Tanganyika)
- the role of women in mining, but also their sexual abuse and exploitation (North and South Kivu)
With multiple challenges persisting in DRC’s mining sector, IPIS continues its support and capacity building efforts for DRC’s civil society. More studies are forthcoming as «Voix du Congo» – regularly check our website to keep up to date.
2. VOICES FROM TANZANIA
detailing business and human rights challenges in Tanzania’s main economic sectors, including agriculture, tourism and resource extraction.
