The Business and Human Rights research programme focuses on the business and human rights issues relevant to corporate actors operating in our focal region, encompassing also environmental, social and governance (ESG) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) matters. It places an emphasis on existing regulatory and non-regulatory initiatives for securing responsible business conduct whilst drawing on our in-region expertise to support emerging efforts to ensure corporate human rights compliance and sustainable responsible business.

Advancing responsible mining and community rights in Tanzania – Roundtable takeaways
On 12 March 2026, IPIS, in cooperation with the Belgian Embassy to Tanzania and ENABEL, organized a roundtable discussion at the EU Delegation in Dar es Salaam. The roundtable aimed to explore how Tanzania’s growing (critical) minerals sector can contribute to inclusive development and community rights.

IPIS receives ICoCA Responsible Security Award for its Kuf(u)atilia incident monitoring systems
In December 2025, IPIS was awarded the inaugural ICoCA Responsible Security Award for its work on the Kuf(u)atilia networks. IPIS was recognized for developing two community-based incident-monitoring systems: Kufatilia in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Kufuatilia in Tanzania.

CSOs gather in Dar es Salaam to strategize on engagement with extractive sector companies
In June 2025, IPIS convened a workshop in Dar es Salaam, bringing together 11 civil society organizations (CSOs) to strengthen strategies and coordination for engaging with companies in the extractive sector. The event brought together both grassroots organizations working directly with communities living near extractive sites or infrastructure, and more policy-oriented CSOs engaged in advocacy and regulatory dialogue.
