At the start of August 2018, five Tanzanian civil society organisations gathered in Dar es Salaam for a three-day training on field research and report writing. The training forms part of the EU-funded project ‘Improving monitoring, research and dialogue on Business & Human Rights in Tanzania’ which is implemented by IPIS, the Tanzanian Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG), and Business and Human Rights Tanzania (BHRT).

The training aimed at strengthening the capacity of civil society organisations on how to research and report on issues related to business and human rights. As such, it forms the start of a longer-term engagement with these organisations that will, in the coming months, each undertake a small research project on a pertinent case study in Tanzania. The results of these researches will be published as contributions to a new “Voices from Tanzania” series, edited by IPIS.

This “Voices from Tanzania” series strives to give a wider platform to Tanzanian civil society organisations. Many of them have unique knowledge and access to information on business and human rights challenges, but often struggle to reach a national, let alone international, audience. The first edition in this series is expected by the end of 2018. A second and third edition will follow in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

During the training, expertise was exchanged on topics such as the UN Guiding Principles on business and human rights, planning and running a research project, conducting field research and report writing. The lively interactions between participants sparked enthusiastic exchanges of expertise, which proved valuable to everyone, from those setting their first steps in report writing to the more seasoned researchers in the group.

Most participants will start their field work for this project very soon – we are looking forward to the fruits of their hard work!
