NEWS IN BRIEFA year after the Seleka rebel coalition ousted president Bozizé, intercommunal violence and killings rage on despite the cessation of large-scale conflict in the Central African Republic. The weekend saw fierce fighting reignite in Bangui, where 20 people are reported killed and dozens wounded amid heavy fire from automatic weapons and grenade attacks. A fatal attack on MISCA by anti-balaka militias 80 km north of the capital has prompted the force to announce its intention to treat these militia as enemy combatants. Meanwhile, the UN continues to appeal for further support from the international community to avert the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe and restore stability to the country. In the DRC, over 100 Congolese refugees returning from Uganda are believed to have died as their repatriation vessel sank in Lake Albert. Meanwhile, an ambush on FARDC troops by ADF/Nalu in Beni (North Kivu) on Thursday occasioned 40 deaths (7 soldiers and 33 militiamen). In Uvira (South Kivu), FARDC forces have reported killing four Burundian FNL rebels during patrols seeking to secure villages around Kiliba. The Raia Mutomboki were active in Shabunda (South Kivu), and Punia (Maniema), this week, whilst the Bakata Katanga launched a new attack in three groupement in Mitwaba territory, Katanga. Friday saw reports on Afrik.com of the distribution of pamphlets in Butembo, North Kivu, announcing the return of M23, and this week the US announced plans to upscale its support to Special Ops forces tracking the Lord’s Resistance Army, dispatching US military aircraft to join the hunt. The heads of state of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region met this week to discuss the continuing fight against negative forces in the DRC, an event under the auspices of which attempts were made to thaw the diplomatic freeze between Rwanda and South Africa. Both Zuma and Kagame are reported to have participated in an in camera discussion on recent diplomatic events. Tullow Oil has become the first extraction company to disclose payments made to governments at project level in anticipation of the coming into force of the EU’s new rules on disclosure. The news came as high-level officials met in Goma for the Second National Conference on Mining in the DRC, on the theme of “sustainable and transparent management of natural resources in post-conflict DRC”. In Burundi, twenty opposition supporters have been handed down life imprisonment terms for their participation in an illegal demonstration that turned violent. |
