Can Radios Stop the Lord’s Resistance Army in Congo? – By Scott Ross | 10 October 2013 | African Arguments
In northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), rural radio stations are used to protect civilians from violence.  Part of a growing network of high frequency (HF) shortwave radios that connects rural villages in remote parts of the DRC and neighboring Central African Republic (CAR), these radios are switched on each day as local radio operators report their village’s status in relation to a widespread conflict in the region.

The suspension of the Ugandan army operation in the Central African Republic (CAR) following the overthrow of the CAR regime in March 2013 may have given some respite to the LRA, which by the first quarter of 2013 appeared to be at its weakest in its long history. As of May 2013, there were some 500 LRA members in numerous small groups scattered in CAR, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Sudan.

Give them the helicopters | 10 October 2013 | Institute for Security Studies
Was it the result of a knee-jerk reaction after South Africa failed so dismally to protect ousted Central African Republic (CAR) strongman Francois Bozizé against Seleka rebels earlier this year? Or is it Africa’s attempt at finding ‘African solutions to African problems’ following the ‘humiliation’ of having to rely on French troops to drive Islamists out of Mali? One thing is clear, though: the new Intervention Brigade for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), made up essentially of South African and Tanzanian troops, has done what 17 000 peacekeepers have been unable to do for years: hit back hard against the militias and rebels who wreak havoc in the eastern DRC.
