The Artisanal Mining Grand Challenge is a competition, launched by Conservation X labs in October 2019 to encourage innovators, solution-seekers, and unconventional thinkers to present solutions that transform artisanal mining.

On the 30th of September and the 1st of October 2020, the ASM Grand Challenge Award Ceremony brought together 11 finalist teams competing for $750,000 in prices, esteemed judges, conservation leaders, storytellers, and tech experts to explore the cutting-edge solutions being developed to make artisanal mining more responsible for people & the planet.

IPIS and Ulula convinced the judges with Matokeo, an impact monitoring tool for the ASM sector. Matokeo (impact in Swahili) is a mobile-based technology solution to help monitor social, environmental and human rights hotspots in Eastern Congo and create more cost-effective and miner-centric monitoring systems.
