The International Peace Information Service (IPIS) is an independent research institute based in Antwerp (Belgium), providing governmental and non-governmental actors with information and analysis to build sustainable peace and development in Sub-Saharan Africa. The research is centred around four programmes: Natural Resources, Business & Human Rights, Arms Trade & Security and Conflict Mapping.

IPIS is recruiting a Project Officer, starting as soon as possible

This is a 90% FTE permanent contract. The recruitment will also serve to establish a small recruitment base for additional hiring for permanent and shorter term contracts. Therefore, eligible candidates are highly encouraged to participate.

Job description

Based in the IPIS office in Antwerp, the role of the Project Officer is to contribute to all areas related to IPIS’ projects, which includes support in project design and implementation of advocacy, policy and research activities. 

As an IPIS project officer you will carefully organize your own activities and those of your partners, and handle budgets and risks, taking into account the donor regulations and reporting requirements. Therefore we are looking for polyvalent profiles with a collaborative approach who are excellent organisers, often in difficult circumstances, with considerable pressure of time.

Position in the organisation

This is a post for an individual who will work both independently and as part of a team. This post holder will report to the Director.


The salary is competitive to the Belgian NGO sector.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide support to the implementation of projects in sub-Saharan Africa, in close collaboration with our partners
  • Assist in the development of advocacy and policy-oriented materials in close collaboration with our partners
  • Support individual and groups of civil society organisations in determining and executing strategies and plans for advocacy, policy and research activities
  • Assist in securing project funding to ensure the continuity of IPIS’ research projects
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed, such as project management, event coordination, budget keeping, and contributing to evaluations and reporting
  • Provide support on developing content for communications products for the website, social media, and media
  • Represent IPIS in CSO partnerships and networks (community-based, national and global) and other stakeholders such as government officials and private sector actors 


  • Master’s degree with a preference for political science, conflict & development, law, governance, or development economics
  • Knowledge and experience of implementing advocacy and research initiatives; experience in coordinating or supporting a network or coalition of civil society organisations in such initiatives is a plus.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training and other interactive information sessions
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Excellent communication skills with good verbal and written command of English or French and a good working knowledge of the other language
  • Experience in sub-Saharan Africa is desirable and willingness to travel to the region to work with partners or conduct research is essential
  • Strong organisational and personal management skills with the ability to prioritise work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to constantly changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through.
  • Willingness to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including NGOs, academic researchers, policy makers, and business actors
  • Permit to work in the European Union

Selection process

In the cover letter please briefly explain the reason for your interest in the post, why you would be best suited for the position and why you have chosen the writing sample you have submitted.

Those selected in the initial round of applications will be invited to participate in a home-based written test. The test will be organised in the last week of January. Those candidates with the highest scores in this test will be invited for a panel interview at our offices or via on online medium, in the first half of February.
