Earlier <a href=\"#tensions\">mediation<\/a> efforts by the Catholic Church (CENCO) between ruling and opposition parties did not yield any results, meaning Kabila remains in power. Amid fears of unrest in the wake of December 19, military and police deployed heavily and certain media channels were blocked. <a href=\"#tensions\">Demonstrations<\/a> indeed erupted across the country, reportedly causing about 31 deaths, nine of which in the capital <a href=\"#K\">Kinshasa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <a href=\"#NK\">North Kivu<\/a>, the FARDC reportedly dislodged several Mai Mai groups from Binza. Last week, a Virunga park ranger was killed by Mai Mai militiamen. In Kirumba, Lubero territory, armed men killed a human rights activist op December 14. On Friday, December 16, FARDC and MONUSCO repelled two attacks by alleged ADF rebels in Nadwi village and camp Garlic. Three of the assailants were killed. On Monday, clashes erupted in Butembo when a militia attacked the city. Thirteen people were killed, among them one peacekeeper. In <a href=\"#KC\">Kasai-Central<\/a> as well, violent confrontations between the Congolese army and an unidentified militia in Kananga resulted in several deaths. On Tuesday, December 20, 17 people were killed in Lisala, <a href=\"#M\">Mongala<\/a> province, when security forces clashed with adherents of an alleged religious sect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <a href=\"#Burundi\">Burundi<\/a>, several arrests were carried out in Bisoro, Mwara province, after a schoolteacher was found dead on Monday, December 19. In Kinindo, Bujumbura, men armed with machetes reportedly robbed and wounded inhabitants of the area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch (HRW) warned over a newly formed armed group, called Return, Reclamation, Rehabilitation or \u201c<a href=\"#3R\">3R<\/a>\u201d in the <a href=\"#CAR\">Central African Republic<\/a>. According to HRW, the group has committed widespread abuse and displacement in the northwest of the CAR over the past year, killing over 50 people.
