The opposition platform “Rassemblement” called for nationwide demonstrations on Saturday, asking President Joseph Kabila to respect the end of his term. The police locked down opposition figure Etienne Tshisekedi’s residence and the opposition’s gathering location. Although not many responded to the call for protest, 24 people were arrested in Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, and Bunia.

In Kinshasa, three people were reportedly abducted on Friday, November 18, in Limete. According to human rights NGO, La Voix des Sans Voix, over 100 people were kidnapped in Kinshasa a few days earlier, in the night between Wednesday and Thursday, November 17. In North Kivu, civil society members in Bashu, Beni, raised concerns over new groupings of Mai Mai militias in the area. Many inhabitants of Tama in Lubero territory, fled due to the presence of Mai Mai rebels in their villages. In Mambasa territory, Ituri province, about 800 people abandoned their homes due to violent attacks by Mai Mai Manou. Meanwhile in Tanganyika, three people died and four others were injured during an attack by alleged Pygmies in Muswaki on Sunday, November 20. The next day, another 30 people died in an attack by the same group. Two MONUSCO peacekeepers were also injured that day during an attack attributed to members of the Luba community, in Kalemie territory.

In the Central African Republic, it was reported that Anti-Balaka systematically targeted and attacked Muslims around Berberati. The country also saw violent confrontations between rivalling armed groups in Bria over the past week. According to MINSUCA, the clashes between two ex-Seleka factions, UPC and FPRC, caused the death of at least 16 people and the displacement of thousands of the area’s inhabitants.

All articles and other news items referenced in this briefing come from third party media sources.
