MONUSCO has been criticised for risking peace negotiations in establishing the zone by Rwanda, whilst in North Kivu civil society groups issued the peacekeeping force with their own ultimatum, giving it one week to commence operations against armed groups including the M23, or else face demonstrations. Public unrest amongst Congolese youths in the area manifested on Friday with actions demanding the extension of the security zone beyond Sake and Goma, particularly towards Rutshuru. As the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ipisresearch.com\/briefing.php?id=77#M23\">M23<\/a>\u00a0issued threats to retake Goma this week, reports indicate that the group has executed four individuals it had accused of committing looting in Kiwanja. Last Wednesday\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ipisresearch.com\/briefing.php?id=77#ICGLR\">International Conference of the Great Lakes Region special summit\u00a0<\/a>on the crisis in the east closed with calls for the speedy diplomatic resolution of the conflict with the M23, whilst requesting troop contributing states for the Intervention brigade to hasten the final deployment of troops.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ipisresearch.com\/briefing.php?id=77#NK\">North Kivu<\/a>, clashes between FARDC and the Mai-Mai NDC of Cheka have caused displacement in Walikale \u2013 a territory that has seen 397 cases of rape and sexual assault reported in 6 months, according to NGO reports. Kibimba has seen the threat of attacks by ADF-Nalu rebels. In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ipisresearch.com\/briefing.php?id=77#SK\">South Kivu<\/a>, insecurity at the hands of the Raia Mutomboki persists with reports of a kidnapping and internal clashes in Shabunda and Kisasa, respectively. A gold mine in Mukungwe has seen conflict between two military factions aligned to two different families both seeking control over the gold rich deposit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ipisresearch.com\/briefing.php?id=77#BSEC\">Burundi<\/a>, Agathon Rwasa, the country\u2019s main opposition leader and former rebel, has come out of hiding and announced his intention to run in the 2015 presidential elections. Meanwhile, the situation in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ipisresearch.com\/briefing.php?id=77#CAR Sec\">Central African Republic<\/a>\u00a0has been said by UN officials \u00a0to render the country \u201cclose to collapse\u201d with security and rule of law virtually wholly absent.
