Last week in the Democratic Republic of Congo,<\/a> North Kivu<\/a> saw the incursion of FDLR rebels in Lubero territory on Friday, January 22. They attacked a local market, leaving three people dead and four others gravely injured. On Tuesday, January 26, the same militia reportedly kidnapped about 50 families in Lubero and Walikale. In Rutshuru territory, tensions arose between Nande and Hutu communities, when eight Nande leaders were arrested for committing arson in May 2015. In Maniema<\/a>, a policeman killed a human rights activist during a peaceful march organised by local civil society this Tuesday. The next day, an FARDC soldier killed one civilian and injured four other military men in Haut-Katanga<\/a>, reportedly out of frustration over losing his phone. In Mambasa, a Member of Provincial Parliament criticised the slow progress STAREC (Stabilization and Reconstruction Plan for Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo) has made in Ituri<\/a> province, compared to what the project has achieved in North and South Kivu.<\/p>\n

In Burundi<\/a>, the Mutakura quarter in Bujumbura was the scene of several explosions and gunfire<\/a> on Thursday evening, January 21. Police forces killed one youngster and injured a second. In Bubanza province, several people have been abducted and taken to the woods, reportedly by armed groups, to be released in return for ransom. In Bururi province, security forces have killed two armed men this Monday. Meanwhile, a delegation from the UN Security Council<\/a> visited the country and its President in a bid to encourage inclusive dialogue between government and opposition. President Nkurunziza reiterated that an AU peacekeeping mission will not be accepted. A senior adviser to the President urged the media<\/a> to stop spreading negative images about the security situation in the country as he stated that the crisis is now under control. Nevertheless, a team of experts<\/a> from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, sent to investigate human rights abuses in Burundi, was not allowed to enter the country.<\/p>\n

The upcoming presidential elections in Uganda<\/a> continue to spark tensions<\/a> between authorities and opposition supporters. In Hoima, a Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) supporter was arrested by the police for removing current President Museveni\u2019s campaign posters and replacing them with his opponent Besigye\u2019s. Another candidate suspended his campaigns to protest against alleged police harassment.<\/p>\n

In the Central African Republic<\/a> recent LRA attacks have displaced hundreds of people. Last Thursday, January 21, LRA elements attacked a church in Bakouma, torturing a nun and taking two others hostage. That same night, gunmen attacked the home of Marie-Madeleine N\u2019Kouet, who is the president of the National Authority of Elections, and the police station of the 2nd<\/sup> District of Bangui. There were no casualties and the attackers were not identified.<\/p>\n

La m\u00eame source indique que ces combattants occupent le village de Bushalingwa depuis le mois d\u2019octobre dernier.<\/span><\/p>\n

A la base de cette situation, l\u2019interpellation, samedi 23 janvier, de huit leaders locaux de la communaut\u00e9 Nande, accus\u00e9s d\u2019avoir incendi\u00e9, en mai 2015, le domicile du d\u00e9put\u00e9 Eug\u00e8ne Serufuli. Les faits se sont pass\u00e9s au quartier Golf Munwa \u00e0 Lubumbashi (Haut-Katanga). Il a dress\u00e9 ce bilan, vendredi 22 janvier, au cours de la premi\u00e8re rencontre entre les acteurs du projet Starec et le commissaire sp\u00e9cial de l\u2019Ituri, \u00e0 Bunia. In a statement, Police said Mugemangango, who was in custody at Kanombe Police Post, had been taken to his home in Kimironko, a Kigali suburb, for a search, as part of investigations. “On the way back, he jumped off the vehicle but he was shot and died in the process. The incident took place on Kimironko-Mushumba Mwiza road,” reads part of the statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Des explosions et des tirs ont retenti jeudi soir \u00e0 Bujumbura et un adolescent a \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9 par la police, selon des t\u00e9moins, alors qu’une d\u00e9l\u00e9gation de l’ONU venait d’arriver dans la capitale du Burundi. Au moins un adolescent a \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9 et un deuxi\u00e8me bless\u00e9 par des tirs de la police dans le quartier de Mutakura (nord-est), selon une source administrative et des habitants. Willy Nyamitwe, senior adviser to Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza, tells VOA that images being broadcast around the world of crisis and violence in the capital, Bujumbura, are not current. Those who have been firing shots at night and killing innocent people in the capital have been defeated, Nyamitwe said, and the situation is back to normal.<\/span><\/p>\n
