The attempt was made during the incumbent president\u2019s attendance of an East African Community summit on the crisis in the country and is said to have been backed by a number of senior army and police officials. Whilst apparently welcomed by anti-third term protesters, the attempt was condemned by the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"#IR\">international community<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> and thwarted by loyalist forces by Friday. Concerns about reprisals in the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"#reprisals\">wake of the putsch attempt<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> have led Western leaders to call for the exercise of restraint. Nkurunziza subsequently sacked his defence and foreign ministers. Seventeen persons are said to have been arrested, and a number of patients were killed as police stormed a hospital in search of men wounded during the coup attempt. <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"#protests\">Protests resumed<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"> once again on Monday and demands made for the postponement of elections, including from the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region, which relocated its secretariat from the capital. By Thursday, it was announced that <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"#elections\">parliamentary elections<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">, due on 26 May, would be postponed until 5 June. 110,000 people are said to have fled Burundi in the course of recent events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the Central African Republic, the Bangui forum has culminated in the <a href=\"#BF\">signing of a peace pact<\/a> by nine out of ten armed groups attending the talks, including ex-seleka FPRC,UPC and the RPRC, as well as anti-balaka representatives. The agreement seeks the end of hostilities and secure engagement with demobilisation, as well as a revised constitution and the establishment of a Special Criminal Court.<\/p>\n<p>In the Democratic Republic of Congo this week, <a href=\"#NK\">North Kivu&#8217;<\/a>s Beni Mbau sector was the site of yet another massacre attributed to the ADF on the night of Tuesday 12 May. Thousands of civilians from the area are said to have fled their homes in response to calls from the authorities to relocate from remote areas to within closer proximity of FARDC positions. The Joint UN Office for Human Rights has said that the ADF claimed 237 victims between October and December 2014. MONUSCO has called for joint action against the group. Meanwhile, the FDLR are said to be committing abuses against populations in Lubero territory. In <a href=\"#SK\">South Kivu<\/a>, the Raia Mutomboki has reportedly kidnapped 17 people in Shabunda territory after clashes between the group and\u00a0the FARDC. In <a href=\"#PO\">Province Orientale<\/a>, the FARDC has launched an offensive against several FRPI positions in Ituri since Wednesday, 13 May, reporting two militia men dead in the operations. Three hundred FRPI rebels are said to have surrendered to the FARDC and MONUSCO south of Bunia. In <a href=\"#K\">Katanga<\/a>, a joint MONUSCO-WFP mission was dispatched to Malemba-Nkulu this week to assess the security and humanitarian situation. Over 30 schools have been destroyed in one groupement by fighting between Mai-Mai Mvuende and the FARDC. But any sense of excitement over the arrest in in Dar es Salaam in April has been mellowed by unexpected challenges around procedures for his extradition to Uganda.
