In Beni, civil society has reported raids by Ugandan People’s Defence Force soldiers on villages in Rwenzori since Wednesday with claims of the presence of around 200 men. Congolese army units have been deployed to Rwenzori to patrol the territory against invasion. The North Kivu authorities allege that elements of the M23 are reforming in Uganda under the title Christian Movement for the Reconstruction of Congo (MCRC).

Elsewhere in North Kivu, Rutshuru has seen fighting between the FARDC and the FDLR in Katwiguru on Monday, 27 April. The decapitation of five people in Nyamilima last week has led to protests in the locality, whilst three anti-tank missiles have been found in Rutshuru in the space of a week. The FARDC are said to have taken over an ADF camp in Banuku, killing one rebel leader during fighting. Meanwhile, on the border between Kenya and Tanzania, ADF leader Jamil Mukulu was reportedly arrested by Tanzanian authorities.

In Burundi, peaceful protests have begun to turn violent in Bujumbura following Saturday’s announcement by the CNDD-FDD that incumbent president Nkurunziza will stand for a third term. The protests have seen hundreds of arrests and a clampdown on media freedom and access to the internet in the capital. Six demonstrators have allegedly been killed in the course of the protests and there are numerous reports of Imbonerakure attacks on demonstrators. The youth movement is said to be substituting the security services in some more remote regions of the country.

In the Central African Republic, Hervé Ladsous arrived in the capital for a 4 day visit to assess the MINUSCA’s progress. MINUSCA’s mandate was renewed by the Security Council on Tuesday. A leaked UN document has shed light on allegations of rape and sodomy of children as young as 9 years old by Sangaris troops in the country last year. Whilst France has pledged to investigate, the UN’s treatment of the official accused of leaking the document is stirring controversy as he faces suspension and possible dismissal for the disclosure. Criticism comes amidst repeated UN failures to adequately address sexual abuses committed by peacekeepers abroad.

Conflict and Security

Recent news on conflict and security related issues across the Great Lakes Region

DRC

Security

MONUSCO

CONFERENCE DE PRESSE DES NATIONS UNIES DU MERCREDI 29 AVRIL 2015 | 29 April 2015 | MONUSCO
