Based on a <strong>survey<\/strong> conducted between 2021-2023 of <strong>829 active mining sites<\/strong> (representing over 132,320 artisanal miners), IPIS\u2019 research provides an <strong>updated assessment of mining, mineral supply chains and their link to insecurity<\/strong> in the eastern DRC.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Published in a series of reports which can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/project\/understanding-artisanal-mining-supply-chains-and-conflict-financing-in-drc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>, IPIS\u2019 research <strong>critically revisited the \u2018conflict minerals\u2019 paradigm<\/strong> which has dominated understandings of linkages between mineral exploitation and armed conflict in the region thus far. In doing so, IPIS showed that <strong>mining in the eastern DRC is still heavily militarized<\/strong>, but that resource-related conflicts are complex and multidimensional. Various <strong>other issues interact with natural resources<\/strong>, including access to land, intercommunity tensions and their historical roots, failing DDR programs, and long-lasting governance issues. Critically, <strong>IPIS also analyzed a range of other issues and risks<\/strong> that are not directly linked to conflict (financing) in the eastern DRC but are <strong>related to structural forms of violence<\/strong> and may represent important security risks. These include the omnipresence of former rebels, the rush on DRC\u2019s mineral resources, gender inequality (and other forms of discrimination), and governance issues, including the existence of \u2018networks of predation.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story map overlays <a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch-dashboard.shinyapps.io\/open_data_app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open data<\/a>, figures and images from this research onto IPIS\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipisresearch.be\/mapping\/webmapping\/drcongo\/v6\/#-3\/28\/5\/4\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comprehensive map<\/a> of mining sites across the eastern DRC.
