As part of this project, IPIS is supporting the Ministry of Mines in mapping artisanal mining sites in western CAR (Nana-Mamb\u00e9r\u00e9, Ombella-M\u2019Poko, Ouham-Pend\u00e9, Lobaye, Sangha-Mba\u00e9r\u00e9, Mamb\u00e9r\u00e9-Kade\u00ef, Ouham\u2026).<\/p>\n<p>Following the recruitment of enumerators and a \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/2019\/05\/new-project-mapping-artisanal-small-scale-mining-sites-central-african-republic\/\">four-day training held in Bangui<\/a>, IPIS field teams, consisting of 5 pairs of \u00a0one member from the civil society organization and one \u00a0focal point from the Kimberley Process, conducted their first field deployment in order to map artisanal mining sites in Western CAR. 192 mining sites were visited during an intense 21-days field mission.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8567\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8567\" style=\"width: 627px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Afbeelding3.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8567\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Afbeelding3-300x296.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Afbeelding3-300x296.png 300w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Afbeelding3-50x50.png 50w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Afbeelding3-400x395.png 400w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Afbeelding3-88x88.png 88w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Afbeelding3.png 583w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">While deployed, teams are constantly monitored and can communicate with IPIS\u2019 focal point via their satellite communicator InReach Garmin device.<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About 55 000 miners were estimated working on the visited sites, for an average of 290 miners per site.\u00a0 A mining site in Western CAR is usually understood as a combination of several <em>chantiers<\/em> within a certain proximity. On average, 15 <em>chantiers<\/em> were reported on site, which means that about 20 workers were active on each <em>chantier<\/em>.
