The main purpose of this annual dialogue is <strong>to raise awareness, build trust <\/strong>and<strong> ensure multi-stakeholder buy-in to advance the agenda on business and human rights<\/strong> <strong>in Tanzania<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The day\u2019s programme included a brief overview of the <strong>key concepts and (inter-)national frameworks<\/strong> on business and human rights, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/documents\/publications\/GuidingprinciplesBusinesshr_eN.pdf\">the UN Guiding Principles<\/a>. This was followed by the presentation of <strong>five case studies <\/strong>on pertinent business and human rights issues in Tanzania that were conducted by <span style=\"color: #4283a0;\">CHRAGG, BHRT, IPIS, Governance Links<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #4283a0;\">the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_122946.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8260 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_122946-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_122946-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_122946-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_122946-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_122946-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Their studies focused on human rights issues to watch during <em>the planned<\/em> <em>construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline<\/em>, on <em>labour rights issues in the fish processing and cut flower industries<\/em> of Mwanza and Arusha respectively, on the tense relation between <em>tourism investment and land rights<\/em> in Sadaani National Park, and that between <em>forest conservation and limestone mining<\/em> in Kigoma Region. This work will be published as the first volume in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/home\/capacity-building\/voices-from-the-south\/voices-from-tanzania\/\"><strong><em>\u201cVoices from Tanzania\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the afternoon, participants were invited to discuss the <strong>current state of protection of human rights<\/strong> <strong>in relation to business activities in Tanzania<\/strong>. Building on the participants\u2019 own expertise, the 2017 <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnaps.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/tanzania-bhr-nba_final_nov2017.pdf\">National Baseline Assessment<\/a> and context updates from stakeholder consultations held in 2018, <strong>key \u2018business and human rights\u2019 challenges and priorities<\/strong> were identified in the areas of \u2018labour\u2019, \u2018land\u2019, \u2018environment management\u2019 and \u2018tax regime\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_163715.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8261 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_163715-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_163715-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_163715-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_163715-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/20190321_163715-400x225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Group discussions were lively and engaged, and raised issues such as inadequate coherence, monitoring and enforcement of existing legislation, the cross-cutting nature of topics such as land, environment and gender in safeguarding human rights and the absolute need for increased awareness on the topic of business and human rights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the end of a fruitful day of exchanges and debate, <strong>\u2018land rights and environment\u2019<\/strong> emerged as the priority topic to focus on next.
