The D4D prize\u00a0goes to initiatives that use digital tools to enhance the sustainable development goals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the &#8220;Okapi Wildlife Reserve&#8221; map IPIS demonstrates how participatory science and digital technology can contribute to sustainable development, using satellite imagery, open-source data sharing and community-driven, low-threshold digital actions (&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/home\/conflict-mapping\/maps\/mapathon\/?hilite=%27mapathon%27\">mapathons<\/a>&#8216;).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The map shows the impact of increased poaching, deforestation, illegal mining operations, rebel activity and immigration into the park. This allows\u00a0<em>l\u2019Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature <\/em>(ICCN), Okapi Wildlife Reserve park rangers and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to develop a suited strategy and planning to sustainably protect the park\u2019s flora, fauna and indigenous people. As such, <strong>this work helps to move forward<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">the United Nations\u2019\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> <strong>(Goal 15 \u201cLife on Land\u201d) in DRC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The map shows the sites and extent of illegal gold and timber sourcing in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Ituri Forest, north-east Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). At approximately 14,000 km\u00b2, the reserve covers ca. one-fifth of the area of the forest and hosts a unique, diverse and highly threatened ecosystem including extraordinary populations of wild okapis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"button\" href=\"http:\/\/prized4d.africamuseum.be\/nl\/ichoose\">Vote now<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.18.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7130 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.18-204x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"168\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.18-204x300.png 204w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.18-400x589.png 400w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.18.png 439w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a><\/strong>The \u201cOkapi Wildlife Reserve: Illegal Sourcing of Gold and Timber\u201d map aims enabling international organisations, like WCS, and Belgian organisations, like universities and NGOs, to better respond to crises affecting the area as well as to implement sustainable development initiatives. Download the map below, or download the raw data from OpenStreetMap and use it for your own map or project!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The map presents the exact location of the buildings, artisanal gold mining pits, and deforestation areas in the park. According to the map the building agglomerations can be found alongside the main roads. Much of the logging activities are also happening along the main roads next to the populated areas. The most recent deforestation areas can be found deeper inside the park. There are 74 mining pits found within the study area and most of the artisanal mining activities can be found on the western border of the park. There are dense mining quarries located in the center and south west of the park as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The \u201cOkapi Wildlife Reserve: Illegal Sourcing of Gold and Timber\u201d map is based on geographic data produced by local volunteers during two <strong>\u201cWatching over the Okapis\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/home\/conflict-mapping\/maps\/mapathon\/?hilite=%27mapathon%27\">mapathon<\/a> <\/strong>events hosted by IPIS at its headquarters in Antwerp, Belgium.\u00a0In true <em>\u201ccitizen science\u201d<\/em>-style, a diverse group of volunteers learned how to turn open-source satellite imagery into crucial digital geographic information, ready to be used in the field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These data were subsequently checked by IPIS and OpenStreetMap experts, shared as Open Data through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/\">OpenSteetMap<\/a>, and processed into the printed map you can download below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.29.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7131 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.29-300x252.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.29-300x252.png 300w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.29-400x335.png 400w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-01-at-16.20.29.png 508w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The tracing was done from the most recent high-resolution satellite imagery that is currently available from the region as Open Data. Most of it dates from 2013, and since then illegal activities have reportedly increased a lot.
