We happily welcomed 25 participants, including students from the Antwerp University and new and more experienced&nbsp;OpenSteetMap contributors. The evening started with a gentle introduction on how to trace buildings, roads and other features from satellite imagery. Then, using&nbsp;the <a href=\"http:\/\/tasks.hotosm.org\">HOT task manager<\/a>,&nbsp;participants started working on tasks in Sub-Saharan Africa including Zimbabwe (mapping houses for the Malaria Elimination project) and Tanzania (mapping roads and residential areas for a&nbsp;Gender Based Violence project).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-16-at-16.12.10.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5727 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-16-at-16.12.10-300x224.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-16-at-16.12.10-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-16-at-16.12.10-768x572.png 768w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-16-at-16.12.10-400x298.png 400w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screen-Shot-2017-05-16-at-16.12.10.png 974w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once&nbsp;everyone was familiarised with&nbsp;the mapping process, the evening moved on with&nbsp;a more advanced and experimental <a href=\"http:\/\/tasks.hotosm.org\/project\/2843\">task<\/a>: mapping illegal activities, including&nbsp;mining and logging, in the Okapi&nbsp;Wildlife Reserve in DRC. Two employees&nbsp;of the <a href=\"http:\/\/wcs.org\">Wildlife Conservation Society<\/a> who&nbsp;work in the reserve gave an overview of the situation on the ground. Experienced mappers will now validate the completed tasks to ensure the data entered into OpenSteetMap is as correct as possible. The aim is to complete this task by the summer, and use it as a baseline study to monitor the situation of the reserve.
