Listing all activities undertaken by our 13 member organisations working in 10 different countries would lead us too far. Therefore, we have selected some key highlights for you.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:17% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"918\" height=\"822\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CCRAG-logo.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23649 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CCRAG-logo.png 918w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CCRAG-logo-300x269.png 300w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/CCRAG-logo-768x688.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 918px) 100vw, 918px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">First of all, we welcomed a&nbsp;<strong>new member<\/strong>&nbsp;to our Coalition from a country that is of key importance to the diamond sector, namely the&nbsp;<em>Centre Centrafricain de Recherche et d\u2019Analyse G\u00e9opolitique<\/em>&nbsp;(CCRAG) from the Central African Republic. CCRAG undertakes research and advocacy focused on geopolitics and extractive industries.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, we are happy to introduce two new associate members that enter an engagement with the KP CSC to get to know each other\u2019s work and activities better. These are&nbsp;<em>Women in Mining and Extractives&nbsp;<\/em>(WOME), a women\u2019s rights organisation from Sierra Leone, and&nbsp;<em>Botswana Watch<\/em>, an NGO promoting transparency and accountability in Botswana\u2019s extractive sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 35%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1007\" height=\"566\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Webinar-KPCSC.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23652 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Webinar-KPCSC.png 1007w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Webinar-KPCSC-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Webinar-KPCSC-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1007px) 100vw, 1007px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">We launched our&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcivilsociety.org\/we-need-to-talk-about-diamonds\/\" target=\"_blank\">We Need To Talk About Diamonds<\/a>&nbsp;<strong>campaign<\/strong>&nbsp;with the publication of a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=biPHJY1_zJI\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a>&nbsp;early 2021 that surfaced lived realities of communities affected by ongoing human rights abuses, violence and conflict linked to diamond mining. To help bridge the daunting gap between mine and market we organised&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcivilsociety.org\/activity\/watch-first-webinar-on-conflict-diamonds-are-real-real-talk-is-rare\/\" target=\"_blank\">a first campaign webinar<\/a>&nbsp;in March where affected communities and African civil society organisations could engage directly with key industry leaders.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), that is often presented as preventing violence and conflict, in fact often&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.diamonds.net\/News\/NewsItem.aspx?ArticleID=67745&amp;ArticleTitle=Atrocities+at+Marange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">greenwashes such situations&nbsp;<\/a>and efforts to address this major weakness&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcivilsociety.org\/press\/conflict-diamond-certification-scheme-unable-and-unwilling-to-reform\/\" target=\"_blank\">fail time and again<\/a>. Therefore, we engaged throughout the year with&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcivilsociety.org\/activity\/highlights-of-the-strategic-ngo-meeting-on-diamonds\/\" target=\"_blank\">NGOs<\/a>, companies and industry associations to explore solutions outside the restricting scope of the KPCS. This resulted in our&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcivilsociety.org\/press\/kimberley-process-civil-society-coalition-calls-for-urgent-industry-action-stop-the-ongoing-flow-of-conflict-diamonds\/\" target=\"_blank\">call for industry action<\/a>&nbsp;that we presented during a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcivilsociety.org\/activity\/watch-webinar-conflict-diamonds-are-real-real-talk-is-rare-affected-communities-want-answers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second well-attended webinar<\/a>&nbsp;in October.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We moreover participated in various other&nbsp;<strong>webinars<\/strong>&nbsp;including a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christinatmiller.com\/blog\/living-room-session-diamonds\" target=\"_blank\">Living Room Session on Diamonds<\/a>&nbsp;by Christina T. Miller Consulting, the opening session of the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/oecd-events.org\/2021-responsible-mineral-supply-chains\/en\/session\/92f430ee-e17c-eb11-b566-000d3a20ecf5\" target=\"_blank\">OECD Responsible Minerals Forum<\/a>, a session on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eng.diamondsforpeace.org\/2021-kpcsc-dfp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent developments related to diamonds, human rights and the Kimberley Process<\/a>&nbsp;hosted by the Japanese NGO Diamonds for Peace, the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uantwerpen.be\/en\/summer-winter-schools\/from-mine-to-finger\/programme\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Antwerp Summer University \u2018From Mine to Finger\u2019<\/a>, and the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/chiresponsiblejewelryconference.com\/2021-conference\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Responsible Jewelry Conference<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Covid-19 prevented us from meeting in person we kept in touch virtually through a series of&nbsp;<strong>online meetings<\/strong>, including a planning meeting in February, training sessions to prepare for mobile data collection surveys on diamond mines in May, preparatory meetings for the virtual KP&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcivilsociety.org\/activity\/2021-intersessional-meeting-opening-speech-by-shamiso-mtisi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intersessional<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcivilsociety.org\/activity\/civil-society-opens-2021-kimberley-process-plenary-with-a-reality-check\/\" target=\"_blank\">Plenary<\/a>&nbsp;meetings in June and November, and numerous online sessions of our regional groups and Steering Committee.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/KPCSC-Zoom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/KPCSC-Zoom.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23655\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October, our Zimbabwean members ZELA and CNRG organised a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/cddmoz.org\/mozambique-membership-to-the-kimberley-process-kp-will-be-decided-in-the-forthcoming-november\/\" target=\"_blank\">meeting in Maputo<\/a>with civil society from&nbsp;<strong>Mozambique<\/strong>&nbsp;to prepare them for the country\u2019s accession to the KPCS that was formally approved by the November KP Plenary. The meeting served to raise awareness and discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the implementation of KPCS requirements in Mozambique.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the year, the KP CSC participated in various consultations by the&nbsp;<strong>European Parliament<\/strong>&nbsp;in preparation ofa Resolution on the Kimberley Process. The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/TA-9-2021-0516_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\">final Resolution<\/a>, that was adopted in December by a sweeping majority in the European Parliament, is a victory for the KP CSC as it echoes many of our long-standing demands. This includes the expansion of the KPCS\u2019 scope with human rights and environmental issues, stronger controls and oversight on KPCS\u2019 requirements, as well more support and respect for the important role of civil society in this process. The European Parliament moreover called on the European Commission to explore autonomous EU measures to overcome the shortcomings and gaps in the KPCS.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:34% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/KP-Regional-Cooperation-Central-Africa--1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23658 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/KP-Regional-Cooperation-Central-Africa--1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/KP-Regional-Cooperation-Central-Africa--300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/KP-Regional-Cooperation-Central-Africa--768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/KP-Regional-Cooperation-Central-Africa-.jpeg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">From 20-22 December the KP CSC actively participated in a&nbsp;<strong>KP Regional Cooperation Workshop&nbsp;<\/strong>in Yaounde, Cameroon. The workshop dealt specifically with avenues of action for law enforcement to stem the illicit diamond flow in Central Africa by enhancing cooperation between the Central African Republic, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Gabon and Angola. KP CSC members delivered an opening address and an overview of research on illicit diamond flows in Central Africa, lessons learned from the KP regional approach in the Mano River Union and independent KP monitoring in Cameroon.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to our coordinated efforts in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kpcivilsociety.org\/activity\/coming-up-new-publications-on-the-artisanal-diamond-mining-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\">mapping the socio-economic and human rights impact of mining<\/a>&nbsp;in 8 African countries, the members of our Coalition completed numerous activities on the national and regional level.
