In the framework of the EU-funded project\u00a0\u201cImproving monitoring, research and dialogue on Business & Human Rights in Tanzania\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>IPIS, the Tanzanian Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG), and Business and Human Rights Tanzania (BHRT), launch the \u201cVoices from Tanzania\u201d\u00a0<\/em>series.<\/p>

With this publication series, we want to provide editorial training and support for Tanzanian civil society actors who want to put their experiences and knowledge on business and human rights issues in writing. Many of them have unique knowledge and access to information on business and human rights challenges, but often struggle to reach a national, let alone international, audience<\/p>

The \u201cVoices from Tanzania\u201d\u00a0<\/em>series strives to give a wider platform to Tanzanian civil society organisations<\/strong>. We aim to form a bridge between the hands-on local experience and expertise of Tanzanian civil society and an international audience of donors, researchers, private sector, NGOs, etc.<\/p>

The\u00a0\u201cVoices from Tanzania\u201d<\/em>\u00a0publications, including the analyses and recommendations presented, are based on the research conducted by our Tanzanian partners and solely belong to them. IPIS\u2019 input remains limited to providing the necessary editorial training and support, and to supporting\u00a0the dissemination of these publications as an edited volume to a wide, international audience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cVoices from Tanzania \u2013 case studies on Business and Human Rights (Volume 1)\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/a> presents five case studies<\/strong> on pertinent corporate human rights issues in Tanzania<\/strong> as conducted by Business and Human Rights Tanzania (BHRT), the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG)<\/span>, Governance Links Tanzania<\/span>, the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC)<\/span> and IPIS<\/span>\u2019 project manager in Tanzania.<\/p>

The publication<\/a> offers a diverse range of human rights topics, from human rights issues to watch during the planned construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline<\/strong>, to labour rights<\/strong> issues in the fish processing<\/strong> and cut flower industries<\/strong> of Mwanza and Arusha respectively, to the tense relation between tourism<\/strong> investment and land rights<\/strong> in Sadaani National Park<\/strong>, and that between forest conservation<\/strong> and limestone mining<\/strong> in Kigoma<\/strong> Region.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

VOLUME 2<\/h3>

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cVoices from Tanzania \u2013 case studies on Business and Human Rights (Volume 2)\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/strong> presents four cases studies that focus on<\/strong> \u201cland rights and environment\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong> The studies are conducted by Tanzanian civil society organisations Lawyers\u2019 Environmental Action Team (LEAT<\/strong>) , HakiArdhi<\/strong> (the Land Rights Research and Resources Institute), Tanzania Women Empowerment in Action (TAWEA<\/strong>) and<\/span> Community Economic Development and Social Transformation (Cedesota<\/strong>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The case studies<\/a> in the second volume \u00a0<\/strong>address two pertinent issues: (1) how are initiatives to increase land tenure security and land use planning<\/strong> affecting rural communities, and (2) how are conservation efforts<\/strong> impacting land and human rights in villages adjacent to protected areas?The topics studied are the immediate impacts of the Land Tenure Support Programme<\/strong> (Kilombero – Morogoro), Village Land Use Planning<\/strong> as a tool for land (resource) governance (Kilolo – Iringa), and the impact of conservation actions in protected areas in Kigoma and Arusha<\/strong> on human rights of nearby communities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

VOLUME 3<\/h3>

In 2020,\u00a0<\/span>five new partner organisations<\/span> prepared\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/a><\/span>third volume of case studies\u00a0<\/i><\/a><\/b>on<\/b> <\/a><\/span>the human rights impact of large-scale infrastructure projects.<\/strong><\/p>

\"\"<\/a>Central to these studies are questions of (1) <\/span>human rights due diligence <\/b><\/span>by implementing companies, (2) <\/span>community impacts<\/b><\/span> of specific infrastructure projects, (3) <\/span>access to remedy <\/b><\/span>in case of harm, and (4) <\/span>community consultation, participation and awareness<\/b><\/span> related to infrastructure development and human rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
