The police response to demonstrations, which has included the firing of live ammunition, continues to be condemned by rights groups, who highlight the death of at least 20 civilians since the start of the crisis and the excessive use of force by State authorities. As UN brokered dialogue between the opposing parties closed without agreement on Friday, diplomatic focus shifted to the East African Community, where leaders called upon Burundi to postpone local and parliamentary elections for at least 6 weeks. Dissatisfied with the EAC response, which failed to address the issue of a third term, protesters continued to demonstrate over the weekend with a short pause on Monday. As two of five Independent Electoral Commission board members tendered their resignation to flee abroad this week, the body resolved to delay the forthcoming vote, due on Friday, 5 June – a move welcomed by opposition campaigners.

In the DRC, North Kivu this week saw an attack by unknown gunmen on Goma airport on Tuesday morning leave several dead and prompt numerous arrests. Looting by FDLR elements was reported on Sunday night in Nyirangongo. In Bondo territory, Province Orientale, residents fled their homes since Friday amidst alarm over LRA abuses in the locality. Aveba in Irumu has likewise seen significant displacement since Thursday following clashes between the FARDC and the FRPI, who are said to have regrouped in the locality, though have since been dislodged by the FARDC. In Katanga, a series of conflicts between Bantu and Pygmy communities in Manono territory claimed four lives at the weekend. Meanwhile, in Equateur, inter-communal tensions in a dispute over fishing rights on the Momboto river have prompted the intervention of provincial authorities after the stabbing of a local chief and the burning of 50 homes in Bosomelo nearly two weeks ago.

Violent retaliatory inter-communal clashes were once again reported in Bangui this week killing two last Wednesday and Thursday and triggering further gunfire.
