As further calls were made for the appointment of a US Envoy to the Great Lakes Region this week, Bujumbura was rocked by a grenade attack<\/a> on a crowded market place on Friday, 22 May, killing two. The attack was followed on Saturday by the murder of UPD opposition leader, Zedi Feruzi<\/a>, in a drive by shooting. Feruzi\u2019s assassination has prompted widespread condemnation and is said to have driven many opposition leaders and activists into hiding, occasioning the suspension of talks between these actors and the Burundian government. France has announced its suspension of security cooperation with Burundian police and defence services. Meanwhile, over 100,000 Burundians have fled<\/a> the country in recent weeks, occasioning a humanitarian strain in neighbouring states. Tanzania \u2013 now accommodating around 70,000 displaced \u2013 is said to have contained a cholera outbreak among the refugee population this week.<\/p>\n

In the DRC, North Kivu<\/a> saw two deaths in an ambush attributed to the ADF this week, with the deteriorating security situation around Beni and Rutshuru leading to warnings that humanitarian agencies may no longer be able to continue operations, potentially leaving thousands without support. Tensions were high at an FDLR transit camp in Kanyabayonga this week following clashes between ex-combatants and the FARDC, wounding six ex-FDLR fighters. In South Kivu<\/a>, an armed attack in Kalehe has left one dead and four missing, whilst in Lwango, south of Mimiova, an attack on a convoy saw four fatalities on Thursday, 21 May. In Province Orientale<\/a>, a shooting in Djungu has left three dead, whilst an attack on a mine site by Mai-Mai Werrason in Mambasa territory saw four deaths, including three police officers, on Sunday, 25 May. Ten gold miners have been killed in a landslide<\/a> at Muchacha, in the Okapi Faunal Reserve. In Katanga<\/a>, provincial authorities have increased FARDC troop presence by 300 in a bid to restore peace between warring Pygmy and Bantu communities in Nyunzu. In Mitwaba, MONUSCO and the FARDC have agreed to collaborate in addressing the prevailing insecurity. One Ma\u00ef-Ma\u00ef G\u00e9d\u00e9on faction surrendered to the FARDC earlier this week, though the Congolese army have been accused of harassing civilians in the area to which they have been deployed.<\/p>\n

A report on the illegal timber trade from the DRC released by Greenpeace<\/a> this week has seen calls for investigations into companies dealing in such contraband.<\/p>\n

Residents of Beni, a town in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, are on a tax strike following a series of massacres in the area. Local activists have called for the strike to go on until security is restored. Civil society groups in Beni territory say the death toll from killings and massacres in the area since last October is now well more than 300.<\/p>\n

Selon des sources locales, l\u2019agitation est partie de l\u2019incompr\u00e9hension entre la d\u00e9l\u00e9gation du programme de d\u00e9mobilisation DDR3 des FARDC venue de Goma et les ex-combattants rwandais.<\/p>\n

Dans l’est de la RDC, un incident a \u00e9t\u00e9 signal\u00e9 dans un camp de cantonnement et de transit de rebelles hutus rwandais, FDLR, \u00e0 Kanyabayonga, dans le Nord-Kivu. Les rebelles affirment que l’arm\u00e9e congolaise a ouvert le feu sur des combattants d\u00e9sarm\u00e9s. Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 du gouvernement, on d\u00e9nonce le fait qu’\u00ab un extr\u00e9miste FDLR aurait attaqu\u00e9 un colonel avec une arme blanche \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Un calme pr\u00e9caire s\u2019observe depuis lundi soir dans le camp de transit des ex-combattants des FDLR \u00e0 Kanyabayonga (Nord-Kivu), ont t\u00e9moign\u00e9 plusieurs sources locales mardi 26 mai. La veille, six ex-combattants ont \u00e9t\u00e9 bless\u00e9s, dont trois gri\u00e8vement, apr\u00e8s les \u00e9chauffour\u00e9es entre ces combattants et la d\u00e9l\u00e9gation de DDR 3 des FARDC venue de Goma pour discuter avec les responsables de ce site.<\/p>\n

Une personne a \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9e et quatre autres port\u00e9es disparues dans un lac, mercredi 20 mai, apr\u00e8s une attaque attribu\u00e9e aux bandits arm\u00e9s dans la localit\u00e9 de Muhoza, en territoire de Kalehe (Sud-Kivu). A une trentaine de kilom\u00e8tres de l\u00e0, dans la m\u00eame nuit et dans le m\u00eame secteur, quatre maisons ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9valis\u00e9es par des hommes en armes qui ont tout emport\u00e9. C\u2019est la quatri\u00e8me attaque arm\u00e9e en un moins dans ce secteur, selon la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 civile locale.<\/p>\n

Quatre personnes ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9es et une autre gri\u00e8vement bless\u00e9e dans l\u2019attaque d\u2019un convoi, survenue dans la nuit de jeudi 21 mai, \u00e0 la hauteur de Lwango, localit\u00e9 situ\u00e9e \u00e0 25 Km au Sud de Mimova (Sud-Kivu). La F\u00e9d\u00e9ration des entreprises du Congo (Fec) \u00e0 Minova attribue cette attaque aux coupeurs de route qui ont tir\u00e9 sur ce v\u00e9hicule qui avait abord une dizaine de personnes avant d\u2019emporter plus de 200 casiers de boissons alcoolis\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Les organisateurs ont indiqu\u00e9 qu\u2019\u00e0 travers cette activit\u00e9, ils compatissent aussi aux atrocit\u00e9s dont sont victimes ses habitants suite aux affrontements entre Ra\u00efa Mutomboki et les FARDC depuis deux semaines.<\/p>\n

Plus de quatre cents miliciens de la Force de r\u00e9sistance patriotique de l\u2019Ituri (FRPI) cantonn\u00e9s depuis samedi dernier \u00e0 Aveba, une localit\u00e9 situ\u00e9e \u00e0 plus de 70 km au Sud de Bunia (Province Orientale) ont refus\u00e9 de rendre leurs armes aux Forces arm\u00e9es de la RDC. Ils ont estim\u00e9, lundi 25 mai, que les propositions de l\u2019arm\u00e9e congolaise sont \u00ab insuffisantes \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Le ministre de la D\u00e9fense nationale, Aim\u00e9 Ngoy Mukena, a install\u00e9 mardi 26 mai une commission pour sensibiliser les miliciens de la Force de r\u00e9sistance patriotique de l\u2019Ituri (FRPI). Compos\u00e9e des d\u00e9l\u00e9gu\u00e9s des forces vives locales, cette structure va tenter de persuader les miliciens encore r\u00e9ticents \u00e0 d\u00e9poser les armes.<\/p>\n

Mille sept cent trente-neuf ex-combattants se sont inscrits \u00e0 la troisi\u00e8me phase du programme global d\u00e9sarmement, d\u00e9mobilisation et r\u00e9insertion (DDR3). La c\u00e9r\u00e9monie s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9e jeudi 21 mai \u00e0 l\u2019esplanade du b\u00e2timent administratif de la base militaire de Kamina, province du Katanga.<\/p>\n

Le ministre provincial du Katanga de l\u2019Int\u00e9rieur du Katanga, Juv\u00e9nal Kitungwa, a annonc\u00e9 cette mesure, mercredi 20 mai, au cours d\u2019une conf\u00e9rence de presse \u00e0 Kalemie.<\/p>\n

En visite jeudi 21 mai dans cette contr\u00e9e, il s\u2019est f\u00e9licit\u00e9 que dix groupements connaissent l\u2019accalmie sur les dix-huit que compte le territoire de Manono.<\/p>\n

Onesphore Rwabukombe was found guilty by Frankfurt’s Higher Regional Court in 2014 of aiding those responsible for the massacre and sentenced to 14 years imprisonment. Germany’s Federal Court of Justice found on Thursday, however, that the defendant’s previous sentence was too lenient.<\/p>\n
