Ban Ki Moon has urged the Congolese State to cooperate with the UN Mission in the conduct of operations against the FDLR. Meanwhile, a document leak has revealed that UN support to seven police and military commanders required suspension under UN policy following human rights screenings.<\/span><\/p>\n

FARDC has claimed that around 182 FDLR<\/a> rebels have been neutralised, either killed or surrendered, in North and South Kivu. However, civil society groups in Tama and Itala (North Kivu<\/a>) say they have been threatened by the FDLR. Elsewhere in the province, five military commanders and local civilians were killed in a shooting in Bunagana, Rutshuru, on 13 March. Meanwhile, in Province Orientale<\/a>, FRPI rebels have been accused of raping eight women and seriously injuring two in Irumu, Ituri district, on 12 March, and killing local chief Walendu Bindi later in the week.<\/p>\n

The Congolese Prime Minister has said he is looking to redraw the boundaries of Virunga National Park<\/a> to allow oil exploration there. Virunga boasts the continent’s most diverse wildlife habitat and is home to endangered mountain gorillas. SOCO international withdrew from the park last year, due to international outcry.<\/p>\n

In the Central African Republic, Monday saw the official end of the EUFOR-RCA mandate<\/a>, occasioning the departure of the 700 soldiers making up the contingent. The European force was replaced this week by a European military advisory mission, EUMAM RCA, despatched to play an advisory role in the UN\u2019s intended reform and reconstruction of the Central African Armed Forces. Monday also saw at least 8 people were killed in gunfire in Boy Rabe district of Bangui. Concern has been expressed about the ongoing security situation in the capital<\/a> in light of this months troop reductions in the country.<\/p>\n

Global Witness<\/a> has protested against the inivitation of a company alleged to have been involved in financing armed groups in the Central African Republic to a European Commission annual meeting on efforts to end illegal logging and related trade.<\/p>\n

Se basant sur le t\u00e9moignage de la victime peu avant sa mort, les proches de ce chef coutumier accusent les miliciens de la FRPI d\u2019avoir commis ce meutre.<\/p>\n

The world is still feeling the impact of a financial crisis that came about because politicians believed that financiers and business, if left to compete in an environment free of government interference, will deliver optimal outcomes for themselves and society as a whole. It is for this reason that here in Europe, Friends of the Earth are calling for strict regulation of banks, investors and pension funds that provide financial services to these palm oil, land and agricultural businesses operating in the global south. It has become increasingly evident that, despite many businesses and financiers having a sustainability policy in place, voluntary mechanisms have failed. Therefore we are calling on European institutions as well as national parliaments to install measures to regulate the financiers directly.<\/p>\n

The United States is defending its support of an event in Congo, where an American diplomat, activists and journalists were arrested. The diplomat has been released, but activists, including some from Senegal and Burkina Faso, and a journalist remain in custody. Sunday’s arrests came amid tensions in Congo over next year’s presidential elections, which some fear the government will try to postpone.<\/p>\n

The Democratic Republic of Congo says it will deport four pro-democracy activists from Senegal and Burkina Faso arrested on Sunday. About 20 other activists arrested on the same day are still being detained. Those facing expulsion are members of well-known civil society groups which took part in popular uprisings in their countries.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, police detained about 30 individuals at a pro-democracy gathering in the capital, Kinshasa, according to news reports. Four foreign journalists, working for Agence France-Presse, the BBC, and the Belgian broadcaster RTBF, were briefly detained, but two Congolese journalists working for the BBC and the TV channel Antenne A, are still in custody, news reports said.
