NEWS IN BRIEF<\/h1>\n

In DR Congo, ethnic tensions came to a head this week when a cattle dispute resulted in a violent night-time raid in Mutarule,\u00a0South Kivu<\/a>, leaving 38 dead, among them women and children. The massacre was met with both national and international consternation and representatives of the region, which many have fled, called for justice.<\/p>\n

The international community increased its pressure on the\u00a0FDLR<\/a>\u00a0rebels in DRC, granting them the opportunities for effective demobilisation and warning them of the consequences if this request was not met in a peaceful manner. A second wave of voluntary disarmament effectively took place in South Kivu.<\/p>\n

Rwanda found itself facing criticism from many sides: the United States and rights organisation Human Rights Watch pointed out recent and ongoing\u00a0detentions<\/a>\u00a0and arrests, and the DRC accused its neighbour of giving protection to\u00a0M23<\/a>\u00a0rebels.<\/p>\n

With regard to the crisis in CAR, a\u00a0UN\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0claims\u00a0to have gathered \u2018ample evidence\u2019 to accuse both sides of the conflict of having committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. The African Union readily supported the UN\u2019s call for accountability and the need for a fitting judicial platform.<\/p>\n

The ICC confirmed a total of eighteen charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity against Congolese warlord\u00a0Bosco Ntaganda<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Conservationists have claimed one of their greatest successes in recent years following the unexpected decision by British oil company\u00a0SOCO<\/a>\u00a0International to stop its oil exploration in the DRC\u2019s Virunga National Park.<\/p>\n

In London, a four-day Summit on ending\u00a0sexual violence in conflict<\/a>\u00a0has taken a start on June 10.<\/p>\n

Positief is dat Belgi\u00eb zich, ondanks de moeilijke context, rond dit thema blijft engageren \u2013 zowel op internationaal beleidsniveau als binnen haar eigen ontwikkelingsbeleid.<\/p>\n

\nIn August 2009 the \u2018International Peace Information Service\u2019 (IPIS) published a first map of militarised mining areas in Eastern DR Congo. By 2012, the international interest in the issue had grown but the map was out-dated. To find a structural solution, IPIS sat down with the Congolese mining cadastre (CAMI) and agreed to set up a permanent system to monitor artisanal mining activities and the involvement of armed groups in the mineral exploitation and trade.\u00a0A first version of the resulting map has been published at\u00a0https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/mapping\/webmapping<\/a>. It shows the location of nearly 800 mining sites and 85 trading centres, including information about armed groups presence and involvement, and the scale of the mining activity.
