{"id":9550,"date":"2020-03-24T16:27:55","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T15:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/2020\/03\/second-multi-stakeholder-dialogue-business-human-rights-tanzania-urges-focus-human-rights-impact-large-infrastructure-projects\/"},"modified":"2024-07-03T14:14:54","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T12:14:54","slug":"second-multi-stakeholder-dialogue-business-human-rights-tanzania-urges-focus-human-rights-impact-large-infrastructure-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/fr\/second-multi-stakeholder-dialogue-business-human-rights-tanzania-urges-focus-human-rights-impact-large-infrastructure-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Second multi-stakeholder dialogue on Business and Human Rights in Tanzania urges focus on \u201cthe human rights impact of large infrastructure projects\u201d."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dar es Salaam, 18 March 2020<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the second time, Business and Human Rights Tanzania (BHRT), the Tanzanian Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG) and the International Peace Information Service (IPIS) brought together <strong>key stakeholders from civil society, the business community and various government<\/strong> <strong>agencies<\/strong> from Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar for an<strong> annual multi-stakeholder dialogue on Business and Human Rights. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main purpose of this annual dialogue is <strong>to raise awareness, build trust <\/strong>and<strong> ensure multi-stakeholder buy-in to advance the agenda on business and human rights<\/strong> <strong>in Tanzania<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In line with <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/2019\/04\/multi-stakeholder-dialogue-business-human-rights-tanzania-identifies-land-rights-environment-priority-topic\/?highlight=Tanzania#038;hilite=%27Tanzania%27\">t<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/2019\/04\/multi-stakeholder-dialogue-business-human-rights-tanzania-identifies-land-rights-environment-priority-topic\/?highlight=Tanzania#038;hilite=%27Tanzania%27\">he first multi-stakeholder dialogue<\/a><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">,<\/span><\/strong> the day\u2019s programme invited participants to discuss <strong>key concepts, (inter-)national frameworks<\/strong> and <strong>local examples<\/strong> of business and human rights. Special attention was brought to issues related to <strong>\u2018land rights and environment\u2019<\/strong>. This topic was a first priority topic for BHRT, CHRAGG and IPIS in their joint project on \u201c<em>Improving monitoring, research and dialogue on Business and Human Rights in Tanzania<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2020-03-19-at-07.58.27.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9552 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2020-03-19-at-07.58.27-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Four case studies <\/strong>on current issues of \u201cland rights and environment\u201d were presented. These studies were conducted by <strong>Tanzanian civil society organisations <\/strong><span style=\"color: #066d7d;\">Lawyer\u2019s Environmental Action Team (<strong>LEAT<\/strong>), the Land Rights Research and Resources Institute (<strong>HakiArdhi<\/strong>), Tanzania Women Empowerment in Action (<strong>TAWEA<\/strong>) and Community Economic Development and Social Transformation (<strong>Cedesota<\/strong>)<\/span>. In the past six months, they studied the immediate effects of the <strong>Land Tenure Support Programme<\/strong> to communities in Kilombero district (Morogoro), how <strong>Land Use Planning<\/strong> can be a tool for promoting Land Governance in Kilolo District (Iringa) and how protected areas in Kigoma and Arusha region can cause land and human rights issues in <strong>communities adjacent to these protected areas<\/strong>. This work will be published as the second volume in the series <a href=\"http:\/\/ipisresearch.be\/home\/capacity-building\/voices-from-the-south\/voices-from-tanzania\/\"><strong><em>\u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Voices from Tanzania\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The importance of <strong>participatory land governance<\/strong> is concluded primordial to protect and promote basic community and business rights across Tanzania. <strong>Inclusive (village) land use planning processes<\/strong> and <strong>stakeholder dialogues<\/strong> have the potential to reduce disputes over land ownership and land use, which in turn can prevent further conflicts and human rights issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a next priority topic, conference participants proposed to focus on <strong>the impact of (large) infrastructure projects on community\u2019s human rights<\/strong>. \u00a0The results of this work will be presented at the next multi-stakeholder conference, to be held later this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The meeting was cut short due to government measures to deal with the Covid-19 outbreak.
